This 19th-century low kang table, crafted from exquisite rosewood, exemplifies classic design with its waisted apron, rectangular floating-panel top, and short corner legs ending in cloud-form feet. A beaded edge decorates the apron and each leg, terminating in a spiral at the knee. The apron is intricately carved with twined branches symbolizing luck and good fortune.
In the colder provinces of China, life during winter centered around the kang, a heated brick platform where household members would sit or recline. Low tables on the Kang served as convenient surfaces for dining, drinking tea, or playing games.
